Reproduction and Copyright Policy for the Artworks of Marlene Dumas

1. Copyright Ownership

All artworks created by Marlene Dumas are protected by copyright law. The copyright to each artwork remains with Marlene Dumas unless otherwise specified in a written agreement. © Marlene Dumas.


2. Reproduction Rights

Reproduction rights for the artworks of Marlene Dumas are managed by Studio Dumas. Permission is required for any reproduction of the artworks, including but not limited to digital reproductions, print publications, merchandise, and educational materials. No part of any material on this website may be reproduced, stored in a database or retrieval system, distributed, or transmitted in any form or by any means (electronic, mechanical, photocopying, recording, or otherwise) without the prior written permission of Studio Dumas.


3. Licensing Agreements

To obtain permission to reproduce an artwork, interested parties must submit a written request to Studio Dumas. The request should detail the intended use, medium, and scope of reproduction. Licensing agreements will be granted at the discretion of Studio Dumas.


4. Fees and Royalties

Fees for reproduction rights will be determined based on the type of use, the medium, and the scope of reproduction.


5. Permissions Process

To request permission to reproduce an artwork:

  1. Submit a request to Studio Dumas via the Reproduction Request Form.
  2. Provide details about the intended use, including the medium, the context, and the duration of use.
  3. Wait for written approval from Studio Dumas before proceeding with any reproduction.

Individual students and scholars are permitted to use material on the website for the purpose of personal study and scholarship, provided that the foregoing strictures are not violated and proper acknowledgements are given.


6. Publication and Notification

  1. Upon the release of the final publication, please notify Studio Dumas.
  2. Studio Dumas kindly requests a physical or digital copy of the publication for archival purposes.
  3. Should the publication be postponed or cancelled, please inform Studio Dumas accordingly.
  4. In the event of any significant changes deviating from the initial request, please contact Studio Dumas promptly.

7. Restrictions and Limitations

Certain artworks may have specific restrictions on reproduction, which will be communicated on a case-by-case basis. Generally, reproductions must not alter the integrity of the original artwork. Images of the licensed works must be shown in their entirety without cropping, overwriting, bleeding, distortion, or any other alteration unless prior written approval is obtained from Studio Dumas. All digital or online reproductions of Marlene Dumas’s artworks must be limited to a maximum resolution of 72 dpi. This resolution is sufficient for online viewing and helps prevent unauthorized high-quality reproductions.


8. Attribution and Crediting

Any reproduction of Marlene Dumas’s artworks must include the credit line © Marlene Dumas. Additional credit and/or caption text may be required depending on usage and image source.


9. Approval Process

Cover design, details, labeling, credit line, and color proofs of works for which an image is provided by Studio Dumas must be submitted to Studio Dumas for final approval prior to publication. The same restrictions apply if a third party provides the image.


10. Social Media Guidelines

Sharing installation shots of events or exhibitions featuring Marlene Dumas’s artworks on social media platforms is permitted under the following conditions:

  1. The installation shot must not focus on a single artwork but should show the artwork as part of the overall event or exhibition.
  2. The credit line © Marlene Dumas must accompany any shared installation shot.
  3. The context in which the installation shot is shared must be respectful and not misleading.
  4. Prior written permission from Studio Dumas is required for any commercial use or promotion of installation shots on social media.

11. AI and Digital Reproduction

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) to reproduce, alter, or create derivative works based on Marlene Dumas’s artworks is strictly prohibited without prior written approval from Studio Dumas. This includes, but is not limited to, the use of AI to generate new images in the style of Marlene Dumas or to modify existing artworks.


12. Flexibility

Provisions for flexibility may be considered for educational use or non-commercial projects on a case-by-case basis. Please contact Studio Dumas for more information.


13. Enforcement

Studio Dumas reserves the right to monitor the usage of Marlene Dumas’s artworks and to address any infringements of this policy. Disputes arising from this policy will be resolved in accordance with Dutch copyright law and international copyright treaties.
